Our Phoenix Talking Therapy Counselling Service is working with young people who have been victims of crime and also engages active gang members. The service includes weekly one to one therapeutic sessions, drawing on diverse talking, art, music and sport therapies. In addition, young people have assigned key worker support as well as phone consultations during weekends and vulnerable times.
The counselling service forms part of our Gang Intervention Work, concurrently with other services both in-house and externally with Lambeth Youth Offending Service and organisations Borough wide. Currently, our centre is poised to become a designated Hub Space and Collaborative Leader on gang intervention for central Brixton and the Coldharbour ward in terms of youth violence and gang intervention work.
We work with Young Men & Culture, having guest speakers deliver session on heritage and exploring current issues and feelings in regards to today’s society. There is great wider learning through these sessions, with exposure to diverse cultures and people while breaking down barriers and misconceptions.
The Young Fathers Project collaborates with the parenting forum to deliver programmes and wider learning on the issues and responsibilities of our young men with children of their own. We seek to equip them with the support, skills and character necessary to transition into the role of a young father.
The Young Female’s sessions take place each Wednesday and Friday evening, providing a space for exploration, communication and support of the young women in our communities. We have strategic partnerships with St Giles SOS & Respect projects who deliver with us on these sessions.
Our Music programmes take place weekly in our equipped studio led by accomplished producer and song writer Neville Thomas. Music programmes have been widely shown to offer a safe platform of expression for young people, a forum of breaking down barriers to communication, and are a vehicle for creating new identities as well as opening progression routes to further learning and employment opportunities.
Our dedicated and experienced team deliver ongoing Information, Advice and Guidance sessions, with access to further support and mentoring for young people in need. We have invested in other organisations to deliver these sessions in collaboration with us, to ensure that our young people are receiving the strongest possible level of knowledge and support.
Our Health and Fitness Sessions provide young people with a forum of exploration and information of the issues surrounding their health and wellbeing, as well as risky behaviour. These include Sexual Health Information Sessions, Teenage Pregnancy Information Sessions for the females, Hygiene and Healthy Diet sessions and healthy cooking classes. We also look at risk taking behaviour including drug and alcohol use. We have a fully equipped fitness gym, basketball court and 5-a-side football pitch widely used in support of our health and fitness works.
We also facilitate a community Parenting Group - exploring local and wider issues and concerns with the parents. Parents also host Poetry nights for our Young People as a safe forum of communication, trust and relationship building.
